All rescue groups have a few things in common. They are made up of extremely caring, passionate volunteers who work tirelessly to save pets' lives. Rescues scan animal shelters constantly, looking for dogs of all ages whose time at the animal shelter has almost run out due to overcrowding, and giving them a second chance before they are euthanized.
They take on cleaning up the messes of irresponsible dog owners, and trying to prevent new messes by educating the public about the responsibility of dog ownership. Rescues rely on volunteers and donations to keep their efforts going.
Adoption fees are usually less than half the price a breeder or pet store charges.
In fact most adoption fees don't even come close to covering the cost to care for each dog. When you adopt a dog from a rescue they are vaccinated, dewormed, and spayed or neutered.
Each organization has its own application and screening process for potential adopters to make sure you end up with the right dog for you and your family. If for some reason things don't work out with your new friend, most rescues will take the dog back.
If you have your heart set on a specific breed, why not adopt a pet from a rescue organization that specialize in a particular breed instead of buying one at a pet store or online? Since they specialize in that breed they will be able evaluate if that particular breed would be a good match for you and your family.
